AP Cybersecurity is a yearlong high school course from the College Board that aligns with an introductory college-level cybersecurity course. It is a brand-new course. AP Cybersecurity piloted in 2025-26 with about 3,100 students at 183 schools across 30 states, launches nationwide in fall 2026, and holds its first AP exam in May 2027. It is part of AP Career Kickstart, the College Board's program connecting AP coursework directly to in-demand careers.
Is AP Cybersecurity Worth It?
For most students interested in STEM, yes. AP Cybersecurity offers three concrete payoffs: potential college credit, an employer-endorsed credential, and early exposure to a field with an unusually strong job market — all from a course with no prerequisites.
- The career field is genuinely growing. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of information security analysts to grow 29 percent from 2024 to 2034 — much faster than average — with a median annual wage of $124,910 as of May 2024 and about 16,000 openings projected each year.
- You can earn more than a grade. Students with qualifying exam scores could receive college credit toward certificate, community college, and four-year degree programs, and earn the employer-endorsed AP Cybersecurity Credential, aligned with industry certifications such as CompTIA Security+ and Cisco CCST: Cybersecurity.
- It signals initiative on applications. Taking a specialized, first-year AP course shows colleges genuine technical interest — and because the course is new, you will be among the first students in the country with it on a transcript.

How Hard Is AP Cybersecurity?
AP Cybersecurity is designed as a foundational course: no prerequisites, no prior programming, and basic computer literacy is the only recommendation. The College Board built it to match an introductory college course, so expect real rigor — but from reasoning and applied problem-solving, not advanced math.
Because the first exam is in May 2027, there are no pass rates or score distributions yet, and no released exams to measure yourself against. What's on the AP Cybersecurity Exam?
The first AP Cybersecurity exam is in May 2027. It is fully digital, taken in the College Board's Bluebook app, with two sections: 60 multiple-choice questions in 80 minutes worth 70% of the score, and one free-response question in 50 minutes worth 30%.
The free-response question is worth understanding early, because it rewards year-round practice: the College Board has said students will receive several sources of information from a single device — firewall rules, system and application logs, a list of files with permissions, and a device policy — and must find signs of an attack, explain the policy, configure permissions and firewall rules, and suggest ways to harden the device.
Can You Self-Study AP Cybersecurity?
Technically yes — AP policy lets students take an exam without taking the course by arranging it through a school that administers the exam. Practically, it is harder than for established APs: there are no released exams from past years, no official textbook, and the digital exam must be ordered by a participating school. If your school offers the course, taking it is the far better path; the applied skills (reading logs, configuring permissions) are difficult to build from a review book alone.
